When it comes to creating accessible spaces, every detail counts — and handrails are no exception. ADA-compliant handrails for ramps aren’t just a legal requirement; they’re a lifeline for people with mobility limitations. The expert-dictated features help ensure safety, independence, and equal access for everyone. At MMC Fencing & Railing, we offer top-quality ADA handrails for ramps. Not only do our aluminum continuous handrails comply with all the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), but they’re also available in a range of powder-coated colors and accompanied by a lifetime limited warranty. In this post, we’ll dive into the ADA standards and why you’ll love our ADA-compliant handrail system.
ADA Standards for Handrails
First, let’s break down a few of the standards found in the ADA so that you know what you’re dealing with:
- Height: The top of the handrail must be 34 to 38 inches above the ramp surface, measured vertically.
- Continuity: The handrail must be continuous along the full length of the ramp. For optimal accessibility, a user should be able to smoothly grip the full length of the handrail without any interruptions or breaks, except at doorways or landings where breaks are structurally necessary.
- Extensions: Handrails must extend 12 inches beyond the top and bottom of the ramp runs, and the extensions must be parallel to the ground, not sloped.
- Clearance: There must be 1.5 inches of clearance between the handrail and any adjacent wall or surface.
- Graspability: The handrail should be easy to grasp. Typically, circular handrails should have a diameter of 1.25 to 2.00 inches, and non-circular handrails should have a perimeter between 4.00 and 6.25 inches.
- Mounting: The handrail must be firmly attached and capable of withstanding 250 pounds of force. It should not rotate within its fittings.
- Location: Ramps that rise more than 6 inches must have handrails on both sides. If multiple handrails are used, they should be consistent in height and placement to ensure predictability and safety.
- Edge Protection: If there’s a drop-off, edge protection (e.g., a curb, a barrier) must be provided to prevent wheelchairs or walkers from slipping.
When purchasing ADA-compliant handrails, make sure that you purchase from a reputable company whose products comply with all the standards listed above. If a company doesn’t advertise that its product is ADA-compliant, you should assume that it’s not.
