There’s a reason why powder-coated aluminum fences are such a popular choice among homeowners. They offer the perfect blend of durability, timeless style, and low maintenance. But just because they’re built to withstand the elements with little help from you, that doesn’t mean you should ignore them entirely. A little maintenance can go a long way toward keeping your fence performing well and looking like new. To keep your fence in tip-top shape, scroll down to review some handy tips.
Powder-Coated Aluminum Fence Maintenance
Taking care of a powder-coated aluminum fence is a breeze! That powder coating is designed to protect the aluminum from UV rays, moisture, scratches, and more. However, it’s not infallible. To keep your fence strong, clean, and corrosion-free, schedule the following maintenance tasks into your calendar:
Bi-Yearly Cleanings
About two times a year, clean your fence using mild dish soap and water. To start, use your garden hose to rinse off any loose dirt. Then, fill a bucket with warm water and mild dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean the fence using that soapy solution. Steer clear of abrasive pads like steel wool, pressure washers, and harsh chemicals, which can damage the powder coating. Finally, rinse the fence thoroughly with clean water and let it air dry.
If you live near the coast, in a rural location, or in a very dusty area, you may need to increase these cleanings to two or three times per year.
Regular Inspections
This may sound like quite an official item to add to your to-do list, but in reality, it’s just a simple stroll along the length of your fence. As you walk, look for scratches or chips in the powder coating as well as loose screws or brackets. If you spot any damage, take a closer look to see if there are any signs of corrosion. While rust is rare on a powder-coated aluminum fence (aluminum doesn’t contain iron, which means it doesn’t rust like steel), you may notice corrosion if the powder coating has been damaged enough to expose the fence’s raw aluminum.
These simple inspections can help you catch issues early, before they escalate into major problems. Try to conduct them a few times a year.
Repair Any Chips or Scratches
To repair those chips or scratches you notice during your inspections, follow these steps:
- Lightly sand the area with fine-grit sandpaper.
- Clean the spot with water and a mild detergent.
- Let the area air dry.
- Use a color-matched touch-up paint or spray designed for powder-coated surfaces. At MMC Fencing & Railing, we offer an aerosol touch-up spray paint and a touch-up paint pen. If you have a textured powder coating like Speckled Walnut, Sandy Shore, or Textured Brown, we also offer a 2-part or 3-part touch-up spray paint.
As we mentioned above, it’s important to repair these minor imperfections quickly. If you neglect them, they will likely grow, and corrosion may begin sneaking in beneath the surface.
Maintain Your Landscaping
Does your fence run alongside landscaping features, like bushes or trees? Check these plants during your regular inspections, and trim them when necessary to ensure they don’t rub against the fence and cause scratches or chips. If they’re constantly in contact with the fence’s surface, they may wear down the coating over time. In addition, make sure that any lawn equipment (ladders, rakes, tools, etc.) is kept away from your fence, as it may cause dents or deeper scratches.
